HYDRANTS IN THE MOVIES

This hydrant famously appears in the sequence that precedes just about every movie on TCM, Turner Classic Movies. We don’t see it in its totality but we see enough to know that this is a classic hydrant, just like the movies we enjoy on TCM.

  House of Numbers

Jack Palance stars in this stark 1957 MGM movie about a man desperately trying to spring his twin brother from San Quentin. Arnie, the convict twin, hides out in the industrial section of the prison yard right next to the stoic fire hydrant of San Quentin, star of the silver screen. Another Thin Man

William Powell and Myrna Loy star as Nick and Nora Charles in this 1939 MGM mystery – Another Thin Man. Watch the opening few minutes and you'll see Nick and Nora's luggage being loaded. Included, a crated fire hydrant, apparently a comfort for Asta, the Charles' dog that appeared in all six Thin Man movies. Regrettably, it doesn't appear in the rest of the movie so we are left to assume its become the hydrant on the cutting room floor. Too bad, it would have added a touch of hydrantological grace.
