CAPE MAY RED

40 acres of prime Cape May, New Jersey property were destroyed in the great fire of November 8, 1878. The fire department, under the command of Colonel Edward Lansing, was not equipped to handle a blaze of this magnitude. The red hydrant circa 1875, which now stands in front of Fireman’s Hall, was in place and operating during the great Cape May fire. It is believed that had the city had a good hose the fire could have been contained in a few hours. For more details visit www.capymay.com.
